Buying, Selling, and Operating Farms & Ranches in the West
The Seminar Group will present its 11th annual
Buying, Selling, and Operating Farms & Ranches in the West
seminar on September 22–23, 2026, in Billings, Montana.
From The Seminar Group
Owning a piece of heaven in the West is becoming increasingly popular, but unique issues arise when selling and purchasing agricultural assets in the West. Understanding these unique issues can help buyers, sellers, lenders, attorneys, and consultants troubleshoot sales and purchases of agricultural assets.
We have carefully selected faculty to provide insight into those issues most commonly faced, including public access, environmental issues, water rights, due diligence problems, financing, and succession planning. Anyone involved in buying and selling agricultural properties in the West will be well served to attend and catch up on the latest in selling or buying “a piece of heaven.”
Montana Land Source Presentation
Andy Rahn from Montana Land Source will be presenting on
“Land Valuation and Highest and Best Use.”
This presentation will address practical approaches to land valuation and highest and best use analysis for farms, ranches, and recreational land in the West. Topics will include when a formal appraisal is necessary, when it may not be, and how brokers, attorneys, accountants, landowners, and other professionals can evaluate land value using alternative tools and market-based methods.
The discussion will draw on rural appraisal practice and statewide land market data from Montana Land Source to help attendees better understand valuation issues in real-world transactions, estate planning, lending, litigation, and advisory contexts.

Continuing Education credits are available for real estate brokers and agents, appraisers, and attorneys.
